유네스코 인류무형문화유산・국가무형유산인 ‘강릉단오제’ 기간에 연희되던 탈놀이이다. 조선시대 관청에 속했던 노비인 관노들이 하던 가면극으로 신분적 제약 속에서도 해학과 풍자를 통해 이야기를 전했다. 국내 유일의 무언 전통 가면극으로 대사 없이 춤과 몸짓으로만 표현된다.

주요 등장인물은 양반광대, 소매각시, 시시딱딱이 2명, 장자마리 2명이며, 가면극을 이끌어가는 악사들이 등장한다.
전체 5과장으로 이루어지는데 첫째 마당은 장자마리가 등장해 공연의 흥을 돋우고 둘째 마당은 양반광대와 소매각시의 사랑 놀음, 셋째 마당은 시시딱딱이가 이 둘을 훼방 놓고, 넷째 마당은 소매각시의 자살소동으로 한바탕 소동이 일어난다. 끝으로 다섯째 마당은 양반광대와 소매각시의 화해 마당으로 이때 등장인물 모두와 관객까지 함께 어우러져 한바탕 춤을 추고 화합하며 마무리된다.

강릉시에는 다양한 단체에서 관노가면극을 배우고 맥을 이어가고 있으며 매년 단오제에서 자신들의 기량을 뽐내는 자리가 마련된다.

It is a traditional mask play performed during the Gangneung Danoje Festival, which is inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Originally performed by gwanno (government servants during the Joseon Dynasty), this unique Gwanno Mask Drama conveyed profound stories through humor and satire, overcoming the strict social restrictions of the era. Notably, it stands as Korea's only silent traditional mask drama, expressed entirely through dance and gestures without any dialogue.

The main characters include Yangban-gwangdae (the aristocrat), Somae-gaksi (the young woman), two Shishitakttaki (mischievous characters), and two Jangjamari (festive characters), accompanied by musicians who lead the performance.

The drama consists of five distinct acts (gwajang):

• Act 1: Jangjamari appears to heighten the excitement of the crowd.

• Act 2: Features the unfolding romance between Yangban-gwangdae and Somae-gaksi.

• Act 3: Shishitakttaki interferes with the two lovers.

• Act 4: A major commotion stirs up over a dramatic misunderstanding and Somae-gaksi's suicide scare.

• Act 5: Culminates in a heartwarming reconciliation between Yangban-gwangdae and Somae-gaksi, ending with all performers and the audience coming together to dance and celebrate unity.

Today, various organizations in Gangneung actively learn and pass down the rich tradition of the Gwanno Mask Drama, proudly showcasing their skills on stage every year at the Gangneung Danoje Festival.
