Humans Who Became Gods: The Eternal Guardians of Dano

The deities of the Gangneung Danoje Festival are not abstract beings;
they are historical and legendary figures whose lives and spirits have been woven into the fabric of the region’s identity.
While historical records indicate that twelve deities were enshrined at the Daeseonghwangsa Shrine before the modern era,
the festival today focuses on three primary spirits who are all based on actual historical figures.

The Deities of Gangneung Danoje: Humans Who Became Gods

The gods of Gangneung Danoje are unique because they are based on real historical figures and local legends. While historical records mention twelve deities in the past, the festival currently centers around three primary spirits.

1. The Mountain Spirit of Daegwallyeong: General Kim Yu-sin General Kim Yu-sin, the legendary hero of the Silla Dynasty, is revered as the Mountain Spirit who guards the gateway to Gangneung.

Historical Source : Seongso Bubugo by Heo Gyun (1569–1618).

The Legend : As a youth, Kim Yu-sin traveled to Myeongju (ancient Gangneung) to pursue his studies. It is said that a mountain deity appeared to him and personally taught him the mastery of swordsmanship.

The Transformation : After his passing, he became the Mountain Spirit of Daegwallyeong. To this day, he is believed to perform mystical and supernatural feats to protect the region.

The Annual Ritual : Every year on the 1st day of the 5th lunar month, the people of Gangneung journey to the mountain pass to welcome the spirit.

Offerings: Fragrant flowers and a Gwaetdae (a long, sacred ritual banner).

The Procession : The spirit is ceremoniously escorted from the mountain to the city’s magistrate office.

Legacy in Gangneung : Beyond his historical military achievements, he is worshipped for his extraordinary spiritual power. His legacy is preserved at the Hwabusansa Shrine in Gangneung, where he is still honored today.

The National Preceptor Guardian Spirit: Beomil Guksa

Beomil Guksa is the most revered spiritual figure of the Gangneung Danoje Festival. His life is a magnificent blend of a miraculous birth legend and great historical achievements as a spiritual leader of the Silla Dynasty.

The Miraculous Conception : A young maiden from Haksan Village drank a ladle of water from a spring called Seokcheon. Inside the water, she saw the brilliant reflection of the sun. Following this event, she gave birth to a son.

The Protection of the Cranes : Due to the social stigma of a fatherless child, the baby was secretly abandoned under Hakbawi (Crane Rock). However, when the mother returned a few days later, she found several cranes sheltering the infant with their wings and feeding him mysterious red berries.

Education and Enlightenment : Realizing the child was under divine protection, the family raised him with great care. The boy, Beomil, grew up to be exceptionally brilliant, eventually traveling to China to study Buddhism and returning as a renowned master.

Historical Legacy in Gangneung : Temple Foundations: Upon returning to his hometown, he founded Gulsansa Temple in Haksan and Sinboksa Temple in Naegok-dong (where a historic stone pagoda still stands today).

Royal Recognition : His profound wisdom led him to become a mentor to the King, earning him the prestigious title of Guksa (National Preceptor).

Divine Transformation : The people of Gangneung believe that after his passing, Beomil Guksa ascended to Daegwallyeong to become the National Preceptor Guardian Spirit, continuing to watch over the peace and prosperity of the region for over a millennium.

The Female Guardian Spirit of Daegwallyeong: The Maiden of the Jeong Family

The Female Guardian Spirit (Daegwallyeong Guksa Yeoseonghwang) is a beloved deity who represents the human element of the festival. Her legend is a poignant story of a divine marriage that continues to be celebrated every year.

The Divine Proposa l: A maiden of the Jeong family in Hongje-dong was at a marriageable age. One night, the National Preceptor Guardian Spirit appeared in her father’s dream, asking for her hand in marriage. Her father refused, unable to imagine marrying his daughter to a spirit.

The Tiger’s Messenger : Soon after, the Guardian Spirit sent a tiger as his messenger. The daughter was found dead, standing as still and upright as a stone monument.

The Eternal Vow : Realizing this was a divine calling, the parents promised to offer her as the Spirit’s wife. They had a portrait of their daughter painted and placed it with her; only then did her body finally fall, signifying her departure to the spirit world.

The Divine Wedding Day : This event occurred on the 15th day of the 4th lunar month. The people of Gangneung regard this date as the official wedding day of the two deities.

The Reunited Ritua l: To this day, on April 15th (lunar), the spirit of the National Preceptor is ceremoniously escorted from the Daegwallyeong mountain pass to the Female Guardian Shrine in the city. This ritual allows the divine couple to be reunited and sets the stage for the Gangneung Danoje Festival.
